Composite bonding and fillings are a versatile and effective way to aesthetically improve your smile. Composite materials are used to replace old unattractive fillings, repair chips and worn areas, and in some instances change the color or shape of your teeth. Composite resin is a tooth-colored plastic mixture filled with glass (silicon dioxide).
Veneers are ultra-thin sculpted pieces of tooth-shaped porcelain that fit over the front of your teeth. They can restore teeth that are significantly discolored, chipped, pitted, malformed, crooked, or in some instances close unwanted spaces. Unlike crowns or caps, porcelain laminate veneers don’t require the removal of as much tooth structure. Veneers are usually created in a dental laboratory from an impression taken in the dental office, fitted, and bonded to the tooth.
Gum Disease/Periodontal Treatment
Periodontal conditions are diagnosed, monitored, and maintained. Non-surgical treatment is performed in the office as well.
Exam and Diagnosis
Dr. Butz and the hygienists thoroughly examine the oral cavity visually, by evaluating x-ray images, and at times using the Diagnodent- a low powered laser cavity detection device. A soft tissue evaluation and oral cancer screening are also performed.
Crowns (“caps”) are restorations that usually completely cover a tooth. They are used to improve appearance of teeth as well as to repair and strengthen teeth that have had root canals, large fillings, and fractures. They can be fabricated from all ceramic (porcelain), ceramic fused to metal for strength, or full metal (gold, white or silver colored gold).
Fillings are used to repair areas of decay, restore worn areas, and at times used to fix small chips or fractures. Most are performed using tooth-colored composite material.
People who suffer from symptoms such as tenderness of the jaw muscles, grinding teeth at night, popping or locking of the jaw, or facial pain may suffer from TMD- temporomandibular joint disorder. These disorders can have a variety of causes from muscle spasm to arthritis.Treatment may involve stress reduction, muscle relaxants and anti-inflamatory medications, fabrication and wearing of a bite guard, and warm moist heating pads.
X-rays are taken to diagnose and evaluate decay, visualize calculus (tartar) build-up below the gum, evaluate bone levels (gum disease), and to detect any abscesses among other things. We use the American Dental Association guidelines as far as individual need and frequency of x-rays. A lead apron with a thyroid collar is always used to minimize exposure. Digital x-rays result in much less exposure than the most recent film-based images.
We offer a great variety of services in house. However, at times treatment requires the use of a specialist. We work closely with excellent local specialists when needed.
